Gil Elvgren (1914-1980)


Elvgren's works are up close in value to the artwork of Vargas. Personally I feel the financial value is irrelevant, but the quality of his work is stunning to say the least. He studied art at the Minneapolis Art institute, an institution that also hosted other artists now known for their pinup works among which were   Robert Skemp, Andrew Loomis, Coby Whitmore, Al Buell and Ben Stahl. Coca Cola attracted a number of these artists to their workplace, and Elvgren was not an exception. During his time at Coca Cola, he worked with and likely learned more from, Haddon Sundblom.

Elvgren was known to have an image in his mind of the perfect models for his work, though in reality they were either very rare or non existent. His image? a fifteen year old face and a twenty year old body. A combination of the two creating many of the works he is well known for. That isn't to say he didn't also do the sexy mature look, but it does show in some of his work that he has taken the younger face in makeup to a whole new level

Unlike many of his contemporaries, he preferred the Monroe approach to his art. Most people when asked what they most remember about Marilyn Monroe will likely mention the white dress on the grate, with the skirt blowing up around her waist. Elvgren also liked this style of work, often showing his models in scenarios that were exposing more than a young lady would prefer due to an outside influence beyond her control.

Elvgren manages to squeeze every ounce of the Erotic out of his artwork.
